Lanzarote is located in the Canary Islands – the Spanish owned chain which is situated just off the coast of West Africa. Many hundreds of miles south of the Iberian Peninsula. And attracts millions of holidaymakers every year thanks to the fact that the island enjoys fabulous weather all year round. Whilst also being home to some great beaches too.
Lanzarote has been a popular destination ever since package tourism first started in the 1970´s. Especially with British tourists who feel very comfortable with the familiarity of a Spanish owned island – as the culture and cuisine is very similar to what they will have already experienced on the mainland. As a result there is quite a large British expat population on the island as well as plenty of British owned businesses. The islands main attraction – aside from great weather and beaches – is the weird and wonderful scenery of the Timanfaya National Park. Where 300 volcanoes burst forth from the earth during the 1730´s - spewing out lava which solidified and now covers about one third of Lanzarote´s total surface area. The landscape here now looks like another planet – and is so dramatic that it has been used as a location by numerous movie makers. Such as the team behind One Million Years BC – the 1960´s sci-fi classic.
Getting to Lanzarote is very easy – especially from the UK. As all of the main budget airlines fly direct from most major airports. With return fares starting at around £100. With a journey time of about four hours. Once on the island there is plenty of accommodation in Lanzarote to choose from. The island boasts over 200 hotels and apartment complexes. And there are also thousands of villas in Lanzarote available for rent. With the largest selection located in the two largest resorts of Playa Blanca and Puerto del Carmen.
No visit to Lanzarote would be complete without exploring the islands great beaches. Such as Famara, Caleton Blanco and Arrieta. Whilst most first time visitors are usually blown away by the main creations of the local artist Cesar Manrique. Who created seven centres of art and culture around the island. Exploring the island is very easy as it is very small and there are Lanzarote car hire offices in all of the main resorts. Prices start at about €95 per week and drivers must produce a full clean licence and their passport.
